An Australian Business Number (ABN) is a unique 11-digit number that identifies your business. It’s a legal requirement for anyone who wants to start an enterprise in Australia. You will need an ABN to operate the following business types:
Why it's important? Your ABN is important as it links your tax registrations to the ATO. When you register for an ABN you have the choice to also register for a TFN (Tax File Number), PAYG and GST.

Register for GST
You need to register for Goods and Services Tax (GST) if you run a business or enterprise and your GST turnover is $75,000 or more ($150,000 for a not-for profit).

If you're not registered for GST, check each month to see whether you’ve reached the threshold, or are likely to exceed it. If your turnover exceeds the relevant threshold, then you must register within 21 days of reaching it.
Register for PAYG
Under the pay-as-you-go (PAYG) withholding rules, you have an obligation to collect tax from the payments you make to your employees (and some businesses) so they can meet their end-of-year tax liabilities.
Register for TFN
A Tax File Number (TFN) identifies you for tax and superannuation purposes. It’s your tax identity. You keep the same TFN even if you change your name, change jobs, move interstate or go overseas. You will need a TFN to start an Australian business.
